Does FLEX need a barbell?

Yes it does.

However, not all barbells are created equal. If you are using a typical barbell in the gym, 15kg or 20kg, then you're good to go.
FLEX won't work on an aluminium training bar; it may attach, but there is no steel for the magnets to connect with to activate the device.
